In Nawadah, Bihar we are working with silk weavers and women reelers since early 2010. Insufficient financial and market linkage and limited designs and patterns have economically disempowered the weavers and many are leaving the work and migrating out of the area in search of labour in other industries. We are attempting to revive the cluster and set it on a growth path considering the enormous demand of silk both in the domestic and international market. We have conducted diagnostic studies, mobilized the weavers and reelers and oriented them in entrepreneurship through our flagship Grassroots Management Training programs. Design inputs have been provided by a designer from Rangsutra. By the middle of 2011, we hope to have a well-developed value chain with local entrepreneurs from among the weavers, driving profits all along the chain with women organized into a producer company. Our experience in Pugal has been valuable and will help us to move this enterprise towards profitability and from stage 1 to stage 4 much faster than in earlier projects.
