The predominantly hilly and the natural resource rich northern state of Uttarakhand has quite low agricultural returns which make the rural women of the region extremely vulnerable. Women form the bulk of the farm labour in the state and do arduous work for nearly 14- 17 hours a day. Additionally, they have low literacy and poor health.
Udyogini began working in the Ghat Block of Chamoli district in 2009. While honey was identified under as the predominant commodity by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, baseline studies done by Udyogini show that many more commodities would need to be identified for value-addition and sale in order to develop a profitable value chain for women producers. Studies suggest the potential of medicinal plants and spices. Strengthening of the relationships with local NGOs and strategy for establishing a value chain is underway.
